Embracing Slow This Autumn

Embracing Slow This Autumn

“In a society based on speed and productivity, moving slowly is a radical act.” - Yung Pueblo

Do you ever feel like the world is moving too fast for you? Even here in the quiet of the Cornish countryside, I notice how speed creeps in, whether that’s through my devices or just the endless convenience of modern life. Never before have we had the gift of comfort to this extent. We are always just one click away from the things we want - material goods, services, people, jobs, entertainment, knowledge - and this seems to be shaping the way we live. When we can have everything at the click of a finger, why wait for anything, ever?

Autumn as a Teacher

But nature is always reminding us to slow down and as autumn arrives, we begin the gradual shift into yin: inward, reflective, quieter. Leaves fall, days shorten and the invitation is to rest and gather. When we align with the seasons, we find balance and are reminded that slowness is not laziness but a rhythm as old as the earth itself.

Choosing Mindfulness Over Convenience

The yearning for slow, meaningful connections to the earth and to other human beings has always informed the process and products we create here at Sati. Meditation has been the single most impactful habit I have cultivated in the last decade and I wanted to carry this slow, mindful energy into the making of our meditation cushions. To me, this seems like the only way to create a sacred object; one that will be used for cultivating mental space and gaining deeper insights about yourself and the world.

The Sati Making Process

At Sati, our process mirrors these seasonal rhythms. All of our fabrics are dyed with earth-derived hues (pomegranate rind, iron, seed husks to name but a few) and our prints are created by hand using carved wooden blocks. The journey each product takes is a slow one. A single zafu cushion can take up to three weeks to make because the dyeing, printing, stitching and filling stages are all done by hand and the process is entirely organic. Just as the trees release their leaves one by one, each step in our making process unfolds in its own time.

Slowness as a Choice

Life continues to show me that slowness is a choice. We could mass-produce in factories and prioritise profit over integrity - but that is not the Sati way. Instead we choose to align with the earth’s rhythms, to live an authentic and peaceful life and to keep finding ways to share this way of being with you.

An Autumnal Invitation

So just as autumn calls us to shed what no longer serves, we too can choose differently by spending more time in nature, meditating and finding new ways to slow it all down.
