Reflections on The Power of Human Kindness

Reflections on The Power of Human Kindness

I know it might sound dramatic but kindness often brings me to tears.

I sometimes hesitate when writing about something as personal as this - my mind will often swoop in with questions like “is this relevant?” or “do people really want to read about something so fluffy?” But I can’t help feeling that it’s exactly this kind of content we need more of in the world right now.

Recently, a friend shared a story on Instagram about waiting to help an elderly stranger onto a train. Another woman stood nearby with the same intention and although the man didn’t need assistance in the end, he turned to my friend and offered a few gentle, kind words about how beautiful she looked. She said she cried tears as she reflected on this after she sat down.

It’s small interactions like this that can make our day - sometimes even our week or month. When someone meets us with kindness, whether through words, thoughts or gestures, something shifts. Everything feels a little lighter and we feel connected to something greater than ourselves. We might call this love.

I experienced something similar recently when the exhaust on my car broke and I had to rely on friends to take me to doctor’s appointments. They went above and beyond, dropping off soup and brownies when I was feeling vulnerable, and reminded me that I am supported and cared for.

Isn’t that what we all really need?

Life can feel so much simpler when we prioritise moving from a place of genuine, unconditional kindness. And it doesn’t have to be anything big or dramatic. Even a warm smile can go a long way.

Just the other day in the supermarket, there were two young twin girls at a nearby checkout, smiling and waving at everyone who passed by. Not just a few people - everyone. The responses varied (some people were in a rush and pretended not to notice) but many - myself included - smiled and waved back. They were spreading joy throughout the shop and you could see their parents quietly enjoying the ripple effect of it all.

Over the years, I’ve come to realise that giving can be just as joyful - if not more so - than receiving. It’s one of my favourite things: offering something thoughtful to the people I care about. This is part of what has inspired me to include more gifting pieces within the Sati range.

Most recently, I’ve introduced Little Reminders a deck of affirmation cards designed to support you in moving through your day with greater ease and trust. They’re a simple, thoughtful gift for someone who may need a gentle reminder that they are resourced to navigate life’s challenges. Each set comes with a wooden stand so you can display your chosen card on your desk - a small prompt to offer yourself the same mettā you so naturally extend to others.

Because this love and kindness we share with others also needs to be directed inward.

As the saying goes "You can only give from overflow."
