How to Choose a Meditation Cushion: A Complete Guide

A meditation cushion may seem like a simple accessory (and in fact many people don't even realise they exist) but choosing the right one can make a significant difference to both posture and comfort whilst you meditate.

Whether you're completely new to meditation or looking to deepen your practice, the right cushion will help you sit with ease by supporting and cushioning you in all the right places - especially those knobbly bits that start complaining within the first few minutes!

In this guide, I'll share some things to consider when choosing a meditation cushion and how to find the best option for your body and practice.

Why Use a Meditation Cushion?

One of the most common challenges people face when beginning meditation is physical discomfort. Know this one? I certainly do, especially from my first meditation retreat when I had to experiment with cushions and blankets for days to find the right set-up to ease the pain in my back and shoulders! Tight hips, aching knees and any kind of back strain can quickly become distractions and a meditation cushion can mitigate this.

A specially-designed meditation cushion isn't just a cleverly-branded accessory, it is an essential support if you are looking to establish a practice, even if you are just starting out. The design encourages a more natural spinal alignment by gently elevating the hips above the knees. This gentle spinal tilt reduces pressure on the joints and make sitting for longer periods far more comfortable.

Meditation cushions aren't meant to force the body into a perfect posture, they just provide support so that the body can relax while remaining upright and alert. And the more physical alertness we have, the more mental awareness we can cultivate 🤍

Understanding Meditation Posture

Despite what many people think, there is no single "correct" meditation posture.

The best posture is one that allows you to feel both stable and comfortable. Your spine should feel naturally upright, your shoulders relaxed and your breathing unrestricted.

A good meditation cushion supports this alignment by helping the pelvis tilt slightly forward, allowing the natural curves of the spine to be maintained (known as the "S Curve").

Common Meditation Sitting Positions

Different cushions suit different ways of sitting. Understanding which meditation posture feels good for you can help you choose the most suitable support.

Easy Pose (Sukhasana)

This is one of the most common meditation positions. Sitting cross-legged with each foot beneath the opposite knee, this sitting position is accessible for many people and works well with most zafu meditation cushions. The malleable spelt-husk filling and height of these round cushions is ideal for both comfort and support. Think functional beanbag!

Half Lotus

In Half Lotus, one foot rests on the opposite thigh while the other remains beneath the opposite knee. This position requires greater hip flexibility so a lower cushion is effective here. Something like our rectangle cushion is ideal or a zafu can work too (spelt husks can be removed as necessary in our zafus, to create a lower seat).

Kneeling (Seiza)

Some people find kneeling more comfortable than sitting cross-legged. In this posture, a meditation cushion supports the body between the feet, reducing pressure on the knees and ankles. You can use our zafu to achieve this posture as the husk filling is akin to that of a bolster.

Sitting in a Chair

Meditation doesn't have to happen on the floor. Sitting in a chair with both feet grounded is a perfectly valid option, especially for those with knee, hip or back sensitivities.

Types of Meditation Cushions

Round Meditation Cushions (Zafu)

The traditional Zafu cushion is designed to raise the hips while providing firm support. Its rounded shape makes it versatile and suitable for many sitting positions.

A Zafu is often considered one of the best meditation cushions for beginners because it supports a wide range of body types and flexibility levels.

Floor Cushions and Zabutons

A Zabuton is a larger, flatter cushion placed beneath the knees and ankles. It provides additional comfort when sitting on hard floors and is often paired with a Zafu.

Knee Cushions

If your knees don't quite touch the floor and you need some additional height and cushioning for your joints, knee cushions are a great option. They are little cotton-filled cushions, often sold in pairs.

How to Choose the Best Meditation Cushion for Your Body

When deciding how to choose a meditation cushion, consider the following factors:

Your Flexibility

If your hips are relatively tight, a taller cushion may help by elevating the pelvis and reducing strain on the knees.

If you are naturally flexible, you may find a lower cushion provides enough support while keeping you comfortably grounded.

Cushion Height

A cushion that is too low can cause the pelvis to roll backwards, leading to slouching and discomfort.

A cushion that is too high may feel unstable or place unnecessary pressure on the knees.

The ideal height allows your hips to sit slightly above your knees when seated.

Cushion Firmness

A firmer meditation cushion provides more stable support and tends to maintain its shape over time. We use dense cotton wadding in many of our cushions for maximum support.

Softer cushions can feel cosy and comfortable initially but may compress more during longer meditation sessions.

Your Preferred Practice

Think about how you meditate most often.

  • Cross-legged sitting often works well with a traditional Zafu.
  • Kneeling may be more comfortable with a bolster or dedicated kneeling cushion.
  • Restorative practices benefit from larger, more versatile supports.

Tips for Comfortable Meditation

Finding the right meditation cushion is only part of the process. A few simple adjustments can greatly improve comfort:

  • Sit towards the front edge of the cushion rather than directly in the centre.
  • Ensure your knees feel supported and grounded.
  • Add additional cushioning beneath the knees if required.
  • Allow your spine to lengthen naturally rather than forcing yourself upright.
  • Experiment with different positions until you find what works best for your body.

Remember that comfort is personal and what works beautifully for one practitioner may not suit another.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best meditation cushion for beginners?

A traditional Zafu-style meditation cushion is often the best choice for beginners because it provides versatile support for a range of sitting positions.

Should my knees touch the floor when meditating?

Ideally, yes. Having the knees supported by the floor or a cushion can create greater stability. However, everyone's body is different and comfort should always come first.

How high should a meditation cushion be?

The right height depends on your flexibility and body proportions. Generally, your hips should sit slightly higher than your knees.

Can I meditate without a cushion?

Absolutely. Many people meditate in a chair or use folded blankets. A meditation cushion simply provides additional support and comfort.

Final Thoughts

Choosing a meditation cushion is a very personal decision. The best meditation cushion is not necessarily the most expensive or the most traditional but the one that supports your body and encourages a comfortable, sustainable practice.

By understanding your posture, flexibility and preferred way of sitting, you can find a cushion that allows you to settle more deeply into your meditation and enjoy the benefits of a regular practice.

And just as a little extra reassurance, we offer a 60-day returns guarantee so you can exchange your cushion for a different shape if it’s not quite the right fit. Please just make sure it’s unused if you send it back - but you’re very welcome to try it out at home and swap it for something that suits you better if needed.
